Oh the weather outside is frightful…….

12/21/2009

It is white, it comes from the sky and it has the ability to bring a country to its knees……ohhh and it’s not God…..or a killer gull.

Yep, the snow is here and of course everything grinds to a halt.  The train ride home on Friday was double the normal duration and involved getting off a stop earlier and then getting a cab to retrieve the car.  On Saturday they closed the motorway (with me on it) for two hours and then the flight that I was due to meet was delayed by 3 and a half hours.  And that is not to mention the poor buggers who got stuck on the Eurostar between London and France.  But , on the upside, the schools broke up on Friday and so the kids got to play in the snow and frolic about for once.  And I got to pick my Christmas tree from the farm in the snow for the first time EVER in my life.

Predictably, the Monday morning calls and emails are coming in, “My drive has a 45 degree slope and is like an ice rink…..I need to clear it or where will Santa land his sleigh?” or “the village I live in has only one track and a lorry carrying 300 turkeys for slaughter is stuck….it is only the Christian thing to dig it out and help save Christmas” or even “they are forecasting heavy snow later today and I need to make sure I’m home otherwise I’ll miss the appointment with the equine dentist and Rudolph won’t be fit……”

And you know what?  For once, I think fuck it.  Stay at home.  Enjoy it.  Put another log on the fire, light up the tree, wrap some presents, watch a movie that should never have been made but sells because its seasonal.  Eat, drink and be merry.  Spend some time with your family.

It’s been a hard enough year this year for those of us in and (especially) out of work.  It’s been full of gloom, doom and pressure.  Maybe this is the big guys way of rewarding us all?  Throwing a little respite our way.  Maybe this is the universe conspiring for once to be good to us and not a total arse?

So my advice to you all?  Stay at home, phone in sick, lie about the snow, and what ever you do……take it easy….and enjoy.

On days like that…I completely agree with your approach.

Of course, we have days like that 3-4 times a month from December to March. 😉

    Enjoy the holidays!

I love the concept of a “snow day” for grown ups!

May you and your family have happy holidays!

Oh, and what the heck is “Boxing Day”?

Wow….this is certainly different. But i agree with it- there’s so much tension/stress around this time of the year- bad weather just compounds it so stay home and be happy 🙂

@pufnstuf: Once upon a time my country was a colonized and we also have Boxing Day and I have yet to get a proper definition of it….we have like 13 public holidays anyway so it’s just another excuse for a holiday as far as i’m concerned.

A Merry Christmas to you all and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. I wish you all the good luck in the world.

And Puf -Boxing Day ( as I understand it) comes from the box that used to be kept by the local Church where donations etc. were placed and then distributed to the poor the day after Christmas. These days it is more likely to signify indigestion and a trip to the Panto!
